What is Het Wed?
Het Wed is a dune lake in Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, close to the Koevlak entrance on the Zeeweg in Overveen. It lies exactly between Overveen, Bloemendaal and Zandvoort, hidden behind the first line of dunes. While the coast is often busy and windy, here you’ll find a sheltered sandy beach with calm, clear dune water.
The water is shallow at the edge and slopes gently, which has made the lake a popular swimming spot for families from across the Haarlem and Kennemerland region for years. The surrounding national park is home to dunes, woods and heathland, with walking trails, a visitor centre and a dune café within walking distance. In short: a surprisingly green, refreshing place to swim, yet only a few kilometres from the bustle of Zandvoort beach.

Why cycle to Het Wed?
Het Wed is popular on a hot day, and you’ll notice that in the car park. Parking at the entrance is paid and spaces are limited, so on sunny days you can quickly find yourself waiting or searching for a spot. By bike, you avoid all that. There is a spacious bike parking area at the entrance, even with a charging point for electric bikes, and you can cycle right up close to the water.
But the biggest reason to cycle is simple: the journey is at least as enjoyable as the destination. You travel from Zandvoort beach right through one of the Netherlands’ most beautiful dune areas. You can smell the sea, perhaps spot Highland cattle or rabbits, and pass viewpoints where you’ll want to stop for a moment. You avoid the parking hassle and expense, and your day out starts in the open air straight away. A dip after a good cycle ride feels twice as refreshing.
How to cycle from Zandvoort to Het Wed
The route is easy to manage and mostly follows quiet, paved cycle paths. From the centre of Zandvoort, first cycle north along the coast towards Bloemendaal aan Zee. There, turn inland onto the Zeeweg, the wide dune road with a separate cycle path that takes you straight to the Koevlak entrance. The visitor centre De Kennemerduinen is located at the entrance, with Het Wed just a little farther on.
Allow around 30 to 45 minutes of leisurely cycling, depending on your starting point and pace. The route passes through gently rolling dune landscape, so you’ll encounter the occasional uphill stretch. If you’re not keen on the dune slopes or you’re travelling there with children, an electric bike is ideal. If you’d like to see more of the park along the way, you can easily take a longer loop. Our page about cycling through Zuid-Kennemerland National Park from Zandvoort offers inspiration for turning it into a proper day trip.

Which bike should you choose for Het Wed?
The best bike depends mainly on who you’re going with and what you’re bringing. A standard city bike is perfectly suitable for the paved cycle paths to Het Wed. If you want to arrive without tiring yourself out, or you’re starting from farther away, an electric bike makes the climbs through the dunes much easier.
If you’re turning it into a proper swimming picnic, the picnic bike is ideal: it makes it easy to bring towels, food and drinks, so you can settle down beside the lake straight away. If you’re travelling with young children and lots of swimming gear, a cargo bike offers plenty of space, with the kids seated safely at the front. If the children are already cycling themselves, we also have children’s bikes in all sizes. At Behind the Beach, you can hire them all close to the beach and set off right away.
Swimming at Het Wed: what you need to know
Het Wed is open all year round, from sunrise to sunset. You swim at your own risk, as there is no lifeguard on duty. If something does happen, call 112 and clearly give your location. The beach slopes gently into the water and is lovely and shallow at the edge, making it ideal for paddling. During the swimming season, approximately from April to October, buoy lines mark off the deeper water so you know how far it is safe to go.
Water quality is monitored during the swimming season, from 1 May to 30 October. If you want to be sure the water is clean at that moment, check the current status on zwemwater.nl before you leave. As at many natural swimming spots, you may occasionally experience swimmer’s itch, caused by tiny larvae in the water. Drying yourself thoroughly and taking off your swimwear afterwards can help prevent it. Motorised boats are not allowed, but you may bring inflatable rings and other swimming aids. There are toilets at the entrance, and the dune café and visitor centre are within walking distance.

Visiting Het Wed with children
For a day out with children, Het Wed is hard to beat. The water is shallow at the edge, the bottom is sandy and there is plenty of beach for digging and building sandcastles. Because the lake is sheltered, there is much less wind here than by the sea, making it far more pleasant for little ones.
There is plenty to do besides swimming. At visitor centre De Kennemerduinen, you can often take part in a nature trail, while the dune café is the perfect place for an ice cream or soft drink after your swim. If you come by cargo bike, you can easily bring swimming gear, spades and a packed lunch. Don’t forget sun protection, a sun tent for the youngest children and water shoes if you have sensitive feet.
What should you bring to Het Wed?
Since Het Wed is right in the middle of nature, it’s a good idea to come well prepared. Bring plenty of water and something to eat, as the only food and drink facilities are at the dune café by the entrance. Useful things to pack include towels, sunscreen, sunglasses, dry clothes, a small rubbish bag and, if needed, water shoes for the lakebed.
If you’re going on a picnic, the picnic bike lets you carry everything in one go. Important: you are a guest in a nature reserve, so take your rubbish home with you and leave the area tidy for the next visitor. This helps keep Het Wed a pleasant place for the animals and plants too.

Combine your swim with a cycle ride through the dunes
The great thing about Het Wed is that it lies right in the middle of a cycling paradise. You can easily turn your swimming trip into a full day out. Stop at Kopje van Bloemendaal along the way for the best dune views in the area, or cycle back via Bloemendaal aan Zee for a drink on the beach.
If you want to spend longer in the countryside, take a loop through the national park and make Het Wed a refreshing stop along the way. This lets you combine swimming, nature and a good cycle ride in one day, without getting in the car even once.
