All three are easy to reach by bike, especially with an electric bike.
The great thing about this combination is that you have an option ready for every kind of day. If it rains or the wind is too strong to stay outside for long, Baluba is close at hand. If the sun is shining and the children still have energy after swimming, Gestrand is an obvious stop on the way back from the beach. If you want to combine an afternoon out with pancakes, Kraantje Lek is the classic choice. Baluba is the indoor play world at Center Parcs Park Zandvoort holiday park on Vondellaan. Inside, you will find slides, ball pits and climbing towers, aimed at children up to around 12 years old. It is one of the few genuinely large indoor play areas in the immediate vicinity of Zandvoort, making it the first place many parents think of on a rainy day.
Keep in mind that Baluba is part of a holiday park: before setting off, check the Center Parcs website to see whether day visits are possible and what the current conditions and opening hours are, as these may vary by season.
Outdoor play: Gestrand in Bloemendaal aan Zee
In good weather, Gestrand on Zeeweg in Bloemendaal aan Zee is one of the best options: an outdoor playground with slides and plenty of room to play with water and sand, within walking distance of the beach. For children who have just finished swimming and still have energy to burn, it is a lovely stop before cycling on or heading back to the beach.
Because Gestrand is on the Bloemendaal aan Zee side, it also makes a great combination with a day at our location there: swim first, then play, and by bike you will soon be on your way home or to your next stop.

Kraantje Lek: playground with climbing dune and pancakes
Kraantje Lek is one of the best-known family attractions in the Zandvoort and Bloemendaal area. This historic inn on Duinlustweg in Overveen, at the foot of the De Blinkert dune, dates back to 1542 and was once used by fishermen taking their catch from Zandvoort to the market in Haarlem. Today, it is best known as a family restaurant with a fantastic playground, including a real climbing dune where children can clamber to their hearts’ content.
After playing, you can sit down for pancakes, with highchairs and colouring sheets for the youngest children. It is located in the heart of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, so on the way you cycle through exactly the same dunes that our cycling routes from Zandvoort also pass through. A lovely combination: cycle through the dunes for a while, then play and eat pancakes at Kraantje Lek.
One step further: Linnaeushof
If you want to set aside a whole day for playing, Linnaeushof in Heemstede is well worth considering. It is known as one of the largest playgrounds in the Netherlands, with more than 350 play structures and attractions, from classic swings and climbing frames to larger attractions for older children. It is not exactly nearby, but it is reachable by bike from Zandvoort, especially if you choose an electric bike so the journey there does not become an exhausting ordeal for anyone helping to pedal.
For families who want a day out without taking the car, this is one of the few nearby destinations that guarantees a full day of fun and games.

When should you choose indoors and when outdoors?
When in doubt, the rule of thumb is simple: in the rain or strong winds, Baluba is the safest choice, keeping you dry indoors with enough to do for a whole afternoon. In good weather, playing outside at Gestrand or, if you have the time, visiting Linnaeushof is much more fun: more space, fresh air and, for the children, often a little more adventure.
If you are travelling with young children, a playground close to home or close to the beach is often more convenient: less travel time, and you can easily combine the day with swimming or a walk on the beach. With older children who can already cycle a little themselves, a farther destination such as Linnaeushof becomes a fun outing in its own right.
The season also makes a difference. In summer, when the beach is busy and the children still want to play after swimming, an outdoor playground such as Gestrand is the obvious choice: you are already nearby and do not have far to travel. In autumn and winter, when the weather is more changeable, the balance shifts towards Baluba: dry, warm and with enough to do for an afternoon, even when it is raining or storming outside.

A trip to the playground with children usually means more luggage than you expect: spare clothes, drinks, perhaps a bag of beach gear that still needs to dry, and sometimes a child who would rather be carried after an hour of playing than cycle home. That is exactly why a bike is often more practical than a car: no hassle finding parking at a busy holiday park or by the beach, and you can go straight from the playground to the beach or back to your holiday accommodation.
